Polo and Malbec

I’m one of those who miss things. So much so that I ended up creating 1000malbecs.com, an online store in Germany to sell Argentine wines. Don’t blame me, it’s just who I am. When did I realize I was the nostalgic type? Probably when I was a kid and my parents came to this country on a trip. Later, as an adult, when I moved to Boston for work and, even though I had the company of my coworkers, I felt lonelier than a mushroom.

Maybe that’s why I seek out activities that connect me with like-minded people and attend all sorts of events to hold on to my identity.

Fede and Polo

For me, polo was always kind of foreign. My mom’s cousins played it at their estate in Cañuelas, on a field right behind my house’s garden. But my relationship with that side of the family wasn’t great, so let’s say polo was their thing. Perhaps my clearest memory is of Willy Fiorito in a coma after falling off his horse (multiple times) and my dad, who was sort of the family’s go-to doctor, giving his opinion on the treatment.

A bit later in life, a high school friend invited me to the Palermo Open. For some reason, I didn’t go. It just didn’t interest me at the time. Nor was I that into wines. Life is a collection of moments, isn’t it?

A Polo Tournament in Germany?

All that changed a couple of weeks ago when Martín Cortese from Bodegas Colomé invited me to a polo event here in Düsseldorf. Wine and polo—a perfect combo. Add to that an asado, incredible horses, much more attractive polo players than my mom’s cousins, and a vibe of a covert Argentine party. I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting what I experienced. So much so that on the second day, I brought friends along, and it was even better. I’ll definitely be there next year, and if all goes well, not just as an attendee but as a sponsor. Being Argentine in Germany calls for a dose of polo and a good dose of Malbec.

Hurry up! I only ordered 36 combos. They’re harder to get than tickets to the polo tournament I was invited to. And I promise the next 6 wines I’ll send in November and December will be just as good. I want my Malbec Discovery Pack now.
